Chapter 1: FIERCE Project

Chapter 1: FIERCE Project

The FIERCE project aims to revitalize the alliances between the feminist movement, civil society and political decision makers. It provides an in-depth understanding of feminist and antifeminist / anti-gender movements, activities and discourses, and their impact on the institutional arena and on policy outcomes, focusing on the period between 2010-2023. Eight national case studies are explored (Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey) along with the EU level resulting in a comprehensive and cross-cutting comparative analysis based on five policy areas: labor market; health & reproductive rights; LGBTQ+ rights; migration; and gender-based violence.

The FIERCE project also includes the co-creation of national and transnational labs connecting research with practice and activism. These work as laboratories of ideas to identify, reinvigorate and renew democratic practices that build upon concrete alternatives and inclusive visions for the future of democracy. The project supports a total of 18 FIERCE Actions which are bottom-up, community-driven initiatives designed to promote democratic participation and innovation from an intersectional feminist perspective experimenting at the same time with novel strategies, and strengthening feminist alliances.

RESOURCES

The open-access FIERCE online course, Learning Intersectional Feminism in Context: A Course on Strategies and Alliances in Times of Anti-Gender and Far-Right Movements, provides participants with the tools to understand, reflect on, and counter current anti-gender and anti-feminist developments through intersectional and transnational feminist strategies. The course includes three thematic modules with a total of ten lessons, carried out by gender and political studies scholars as well as feminist activists: 1) Anti-gender movements and their discourses and strategies; 2) Feminist mobilisations and intersectional alliances across national contexts; and 3) Transnational feminist activism and responses to global democratic challenges.

Open access publications from the FIERCE project are also included in the list of resources. These cover analyses of feminist movements in Europe today, their responses to anti-gender and anti-feminist attacks, as well as the rise of anti-gender actors.

Descriptions of the FIERCE Actions funded via the project as well as links to the FIERCE Dialogues are also included. The latter is a podcast series which offers rich, nuanced conversations with civil society organisations, feminist activists, gender experts, researchers, and academics on themes ranging from feminist movements and gender equality to women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, addressing both country-specific challenges and solutions, as well as broader EU-level issues.
