Work Package 2: Intersectionality & Inclusiveness

Work Package 2: Intersectionality & Inclusiveness

The work package, led by Ella Ghosh from the KIF-Committee in Norway, examined existing policies and practices, with a focus on the use of terminology related to intersectionality, diversity, and inclusiveness in research and innovation. Its aim was to develop policy advice, raise awareness, and establish a foundation for daily action. The work package undertook a mapping exercise of intersectionality and inclusiveness in R&I legislation and policies in the European Research Area (ERA), followed by the publication of a position paper outlining ‘a new era of inclusion and intersectionality’ with recommendations on positioning intersectionality and inclusion higher on the agenda of European policymakers, national authorities, and research funding organisations. The work package conducted a mapping exercise of existing strategies and policy documents on gender-inclusive research careers, to create a systematic understanding of concepts, terminology, and policy on inclusiveness and, whenever possible, intersectionality perspectives. The analysis provided the groundwork towards the development of a position paper with recommendations regarding the promotion of gender-inclusive research careers, while emphasizing gender and diversity as the mainstays of fair and balanced research careers. Ultimately, the work highlights the need for policies to become broader in scope and to address more discrimination grounds beyond gender, in order to promote a more inclusive research and innovation sector in Europe and for policy to be effective at promoting equitable research careers.
